Chapter 18
Tom is pleased with his successful plan, which was to attend his own funeral along with his friends.
On Monday morning, he narrates his adventurous tale to Aunt Polly. She thinks him hard-hearted to keep her suffering; he should have at least told her he was safe. He says he thought of her, even dreamt of her, and narrates the conversation Aunt Polly had with Mrs. Harper, word by word. She is amazed by his dream, especially pleased when says he kissed her, and rewards him with an apple, telling him to be on time to school.
Tom and Joe are treated as heroes at school. Everybody comes up to them, asking a narration of their tale. They feel on top of the world, telling the entire story, along with spicy additions and concocted exaggerations. Becky tries to talk to Tom but he ignores her.
To attract his attention, she decides to call everyone for a picnic, inviting everyone but Tom and Amy Lawrence. He ignores Becky further, continuing to flirt with Amy. She is hurt to see it and weeps a bit, deciding to teach him a lesson. She meets up with a boy named Alfred Temple and sits next to him reading a picture book. When Tom comes across the two, he feels a pang of jealousy. Accompanied by Amy, whose excited chatter begins to bore him, he gets rid of her and considers beating up Alfred. Eventually, angry and hurt, he runs home.
In the meantime, Becky feels she has had enough of Alfred and is tired of waiting for Tom, so she turns and tells Alfred to leave. When he understands that she has used him to get close to Tom, he pours ink over Tomâs practice book. Becky watches but keeps quiet.
